I live in a dorm and am going home for a month over xmas. I have a 20g tank at my dorm which I will leave here but I'm taking the fish home to go in my 90g tank which is at my parents right now. The residents of the 20g are 5 harlequin rasboras, 6 neon tetras, a clawed dwarf frog, and a large gold mystery snail. I plan on putting the harlequin rasboras and the snail in the 90g. As for the frog and the neons, I bought a 5g kit that I plan to set up temporarily in my room (at my parents) while I'm there. First, I've been told that might not be a good idea with the frog and the neons. I haven't ever seen him nip at my neons (and i keep a close eye on him) but they wouldn't have as much room in the 5g as they would in the 20g. The reason I don't want to put my frog in the 90g is because I'm worried about the height difference from the 20g to the 90g. As for the neons, I have full grown swordtails and platies in the 90g that I'm afraid will eat them.

So, is it an ok idea to put the neons and frog in the 5g?

As for my filtration question.. does this plan sound like an ok idea. I don't think that the neons and frog will be able to keep the little tank cycled so I have two filters for the 5g. I would put one in the 5g and the other in the 90g. That way, the one in the 90g is being filled with happy bacteria and then after two days, I can switch them. That way the 5g gets a constant flow of happy bacteria. Would this work to keep the water safe?

Sorry about the long post. I promise there are only two simple questions in all of that mess haha.

All opinions appreciated!!!

TIA,

Also, will the rasboras be ok with the swordtails? I have platies, swordtails, black neon tetras, and danios in the big 90. Would the rasboras be ok mixing with them?

neons tend to be very sensitive fish. I would avoid moving them if at all possible, and i don't think i would put them in a smaller tank with a clawed frog. He may not be large enough to catch them(yet) but a smaller tank will give him more of an advantage, and could lead to stress. I don't think the platies and swordtails would go after the neons (at least not with intent), i'd be inclined to go that route, and then increase the size of the school. DO you intend on transporting all this back to school after break? What's your plan to keep the tank cycled while it's empty? It almost sounds like you should consider leaving them in the tank during break.

I am bringing them back after break. I don't want to leave them in my dorm for a month because I won't be able to drive to feed/visit them b/c of snowy weather and I don't trust vaca feeders. To make sure they stay cycled I was going to bring along the 20g filter and just attach it to the 90 in some empty space so that it stays cycled. So you suggest putting all the fish in the 90g. As long as ur sure they won't get eaten then I'm ok with that. I haven't seen the swordtails attack anything. There are only three of them and they usually keep to themselves...

Also, I was going to increase the school size to 12 but not until after xmas break when everyone is back and settled in the 20g again.

It's not going to be fun catching those Neons in a 90gal. tank, when you want to take them back to school!:14:

I know.. that was one of the reasons I wanted to keep them in the 5g. I can't make a divider in time (which they would probably find a way through) and there isn't any sort of breeder that would be large enough for them to be stuck in for a month
