How big is the danger when buying a used 55gal. tank of it leaking or coming apart with the 600+ lbs of water and stuff? We bought a used 20 gal. tank and wasn't worried about it but if you don't know the history of the 55 and how it was treated how common are problems?
In the long run is it just better to pay the extra money and buy new?
Thanks

If a tank had been stored for some time, possibly in a cold garage, I would be concerned with the silicone being old and coming apart. However, if the tank has been used right up until you purchased it, I wouldn't worry too much.

My son called me yesterday with news of a 130 gallon complete with everything for $400. I would have grabbed it in a minute if I'd have had the $400. Good enough savings will warrant possibly having to reseal some edges.

The tank must be totally emptied before trying to move it or seams will break for sure. You're not talking much weight when it's empty.

just inspect everything! --the sealant, the brace, corner beading, etc. if all is correct then i say purchase it.

I have four tanks now,72 gallon down to 6 gallon, and I got them all used (saved hundreds). I would like recomend craigslist.org. Most people you buy from on craigslist are local and will guarantee the tank will hold water or you can have them fill it before you buy (in your presence). Resale value on aquariums is worse than cars. When you buy new you take a big hit as far as value goes. Keep that in mind. Also as jeff said, inspect everything before you buy.

Wish you lived closer to me because there are several I've seen around here with filters and everything for very cheap. Just keep your eyes open and you will find what you are looking for.

ebay is another good site for purchasing. try to find someone local or that you're willing to drive to so you don't have to pay shipping and handling fees.

And besides, no one ships glass tanks. LOL I'd hate to see the shipping rates if they did. ouch

yankee. . i would say just use common jugement and common sence in inspecting a tank , feel the Silacone along the edges and make sure there are no nicks or scratches or dents on the outer glass . . i have gotten all of my tanks used and have sold a few also , never any problems , but just make sure you inspect everything , it is easy to miss something that you later find out about , Afterthe fact , so avoid that and inspect well...also dont just jump on one tank...look around at several of them and then choose the best one

I think you will be fine with a used tank. I got my 55 gallon used (for free) and it has been great so far.

I too got a 55gal from craigslist with 2217 eheim pump, 2 powerheads, 1 whisper 800 pump, and the stand for $150. So far it's holding water.

It isn't always true that used is cheaper...I got my 10 gal setup brand spankin' new for $40 and the local pawn shop was selling them for $60 used. lol.
