Today we noticed our larger black moor and shubkin chasing and pushing against our oranda's rear. They've been doing it pretty much all day and it doesn't seem to bother the oranda at all. We've read on this site that they will try to push the eggs out of her (if she is a girl) and she will release them when she wants in several batches. She hasn't laid any eggs yet, but they just started doing it this afternoon. I took a few short clips and wanted to know your opinion. If they are indeed breeding, the only extra tanks we have is a standard 10 gallon and a 5 gallon hex, and we also have a 10 gallon and 21 gallon tub. We'd like to save a few but were not sure exactly what to do. Our only experience with fry is with guppies. What would we need to have on hand to feed them? Thanks in advance for any help.

They usually lay eggs either late in the night right before or after lights out and early in the morning before the lights come on. They will eat any eggs that are left in the tank with them and may have already done that from a spawning you weren't awake for. I would recommend getting a breeding mop and putting that into one of your extra tanks after they have spawned on it. There is a ton of work to do to raise the fry to maturation and it might be best to just let them eat the eggs unless you are fully prepared and ready for babies. The most important thing is water quality. The fry are very big as far as fish go so they have a large bioload if you have hundreds hatch from one spawn which isn't too hard to get. Feeding is fairly simple, most are large enough after they have ingested the egg sac to eat prepared foods. I usually crush pellets to a fine powder then add that to the tank. You can also feed live foods like brine shrimp. Good luck!

Thank you for that information, after doing some research, I will probably let them just eat them. I don't have enough room in my apartment, or big enough grow out tanks for them. Especially since they can lay 500-2000 eggs. I will keep that info in mind though, for when we get a bigger place and have more room and a bigger tank.

I think it was a false alarm or they ate them during the night, lol. Its been almost 3 weeks and I haven't seen an egg and she doesn't look thinner
