They are a type of danio really, a cyprinid (like all the danios, goldfish, and many others). They prefer room temp (ideally around 68F). They do well with goldfish and other danios (zebra, blue, gold, leopard, and pearl are all really coolwater/subtropical fish). In addition to all these all the livebearers are actually sub-tropical as well, ideally in room temp (platies, guppies, swordtails, and mollies).

There are alot of fish, depends on the size of tank you're looking at.
There are the bluefin killifish, they are a coolwater native and quite pretty.
Dojo loaches, they can get large and need sand substrate but like cool water.
Paradisefish, any of the species-Blue, black, combtail would all be good companions for white clouds.
Hillstream loaches, cool, fast running water and high oxygen content.
Daces, darters and native minnow species, just make sure that they are free of disease and healthy.
I would avoid keeping them with goldfish, goldfish can get large >8" and can and will eat WCMM if given the chance.

There are other "white cloud" colorations as well that might make a nice variation. There are the gold version, long fin gold, long fin reg and reg and in a mix they'd turn out quite nice.

most fish you cant get locally you get online either from a site or a private breeder, if you look hard enough.

And what tank would a nice school of WCMM and some darters require?

Depends on the species of darter, what species are you looking at?
Personally, for a school of white clouds I'd suggest a 20 gallon long with about 10-12 of them, or more depending on the other stocking levels.

As for where to find darters, there's a guy that sells most types of native fish, I'll see if I can find his website again.

With keeping White Clouds with these IMO I would not do it. Because IMO the Hill-stream Loaches like a very fast water flow, and I think you would end up with more trouble with the white clouds, because of the constant water movement.

We have a pair of these at work and I had a pair here at home. At work we have them with other platies/swordtails and they do fine. Here at home I had mine with platies/neons/swordtails and they did fine.

One word of advice, I think they pair up because mine never left each other and when one died the other did within a day. I'm not sure what happened, but it was really sad since when I found the dead White Cloud it was being tossed around in the water and the remaining one was nudging it like "wake up". Kinda made me sad.

Are the darters agressive? If I got a darter in a 20 gallon how many WCMMs could I also put in there? I like how swamp darters look. Any comments?

I don't see why not. WCMM are native to flowing brooks in the mountain ranges of China. With a powerhead set up or even high flow directed over the bottom (where hillies spend most of their preffered time IME) that still leaves the top with plenty of circulation but without as high of a level since it gets dispersed more towards the top, and WCMM tend to be a more top level swimmer.

I found the link too

He's got some swamp darters, 10 bucks each which is good price for his darters.

So how many WCMMs could I fit in with a swamp darter?

Have no clue about the darters, but the WCMM would do fine with the hillstream loaches, they both come fast flowing rivers..

A great point. What I forgot to add in my first post was that some people would get a far to large power head and place it in the middle of the tank just facing strait down the tank. Which would then be to much current. While you are better of with it facing the bottom more than the top at about 45' angel.

Yeah so what makes them not be able to go together?

Yeah so what makes them not be able to go together?
Who are you referring to?

If it is to me.

They are alright together. But IMO as I have state up above if the power head is not to strong or facing strait into middle of the tank in the WCMM.

With the power head in the right position they will be okay, just not to strong a currant in their face.

I know I might sound confusing. More than likely I was on my way to work. And for got to add the last part.
