I just bought a 55 gal tank from Petsmart at 50% off. They said this model was being discontinued. The tank has no center piece. I was going to get a glass cover made for it but I just read that you can't fill a 55 gal tank all the way without a center piece (brace) or the tank will break. is this true?? Is there a way to make one or can you buy a new rim for the tank? I am beginning to feel that I didn;t get a good deal after all

As long as the frame (the black trim around the edge) is intact, it should be ok. Braces are a good idea are you get into longer tanks though.
Older models dont come with them at all, probably why the guy said something about it being discontinued.
If the tank was new when you bought it, (which it sounds like) i dont think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks for the reply. I took the rim off the tank and measured the glass it is 3/8 inch thick so hopefully it will be strong enough without the center brace.....now all I have to do is figure out how to get a cover made for it

You can buy all glass hoods pretty cheap. Thats the route i would take

tanks without center braces are made with thicker glass, the problems come with lids.
Lids/covers for a 55 are in 2 sections and rest on the center brace
