So I just picked this guy up. He was in the store and under the tag it said assorted african cichlids. I had seen them before and believed it to be a rusty cichlid (the ones in my book looked similar, same blue hue and dark striped markings) so I researched them a bit. But now im not sure because any pictures I see on the net, the markings seem a little different to me and completely different colors. Or am I right? Thanks!

Dunno, my gf mom has cichlids we can't identify... they have an "assorted african cichlid" tank at the local petsmart, kinda looks like one in there I saw today, wish I could help you out, but I'm sure someone around here can.

Hmm well it's definately not a rusty.
Have a look at pics of Lamprologus tretepha does it look like that?

I think it is a Psuedotropheus of some sort...not quiet sure on the species...I don't think it is a socolofi because the lines are too dark

Looks like a Kenyi to me...very aggressive, and grows to 4-5inches, if I remember correctly.

Yep, metriaclima lombardoi also known as a kenyi. They get upwards of 5" to 6" and are hyperdominant. Males undergo a color transformation (becoming yellowish).

As with the bumblebee, the kenyi can become a tyrant when kept in small tanks and/or in small groups. Recommend to research first then buy, when considering future acquistions, and again an upgrade from the 29gal to a 75gal is highly recommended.
