:8: What discus lovers have halide lights? Any reason these are better. I know they are more expensive than some. The store was telling me that these halide lights would show off the discus colours better. Anybody know if that is true.

They aren't needed unless you have a massive tank (150 gallons or so and up) that is planted. There are much better options though, especially for smaller tanks. T5s have the equivalent light output as halides and are used for reef tanks. It also has a lot to do with the color of light being put out. That is why I use 50/50 bulbs (half 6500K and half actinic in one bulb), they show off all the colors and still provide a nice bright white overall.

okay half and half for say a 150 gallon. now what i have here is an all glass aquarium outfitted with the usual coralife bulbs in two hoods. So have four long stripped bulbs in all. i must take a pic of the cover of the tank and post it.

Then I would just use Coralife's or Zoo Med's 50/50 bulbs. Between the two I would prefer the Zoo Med ones.
