I got a Fluval 205 for my 29 gallon. It replaced an aquatech 5-15. I'm keeping it on low setting for a less strong current and running it along side a Penguin 100 and a AquaTech 20-40. Has anyone here used Fluval canisters on thier 29?

No, but I have used the internal fluvals and they work fairly well. I am running a second filter alongside the fluval 2 in my 20 gal because it just can't keep the water as clean as it should, but for the money and for a smaller tank it is good. My experience with the newer fluval models so far has been good, not so great with the older fluval canister we have for the 75 gal.

I have a Fluval 405 and a Whisper 60 on my 40 gallons, and a Fluval on every tank bigger than that. How did you setup the media?

I set it up how they recommended top and mid have biomax and the bottom has carbon. Most people say they use carbon is used only for removing meds. Would you suggest that I replace it with ammonia remover or zeo-carb?

No, ammonia will be removed by the nitrifying bacteria that work for you for free. I setup all my Fluvals with the bottom tray crammed with as much filter fiber floss as I can fit. You can also use blanket stuffing/crib liner stuffing at Wal-Mart and cut it to fit your tray. The rest I fill with Biomax. This will give you crystal clear water with a lot of biological media.

I ended up doing what you said. Unfortunately as I was changing the filter, I noticed that one of my glofish got sucked in the intake by my canister. Warning to all canister filter users. Putting the setting on high with with small fish is a bad idea. What a way to go... I turned my fluval on low setting to prevent that from happening again. The back of my tank is overcrowded with 3 filters. I imagine it can be quite turbulent when some of the water evaporates.

Isn't there a guard on the intake? I don't see how a whole fish could get sucked up. I have a 204 (older version of the 205) and it has a guard on the intake. Also you might be able to lose the aqua tech once your canister is established.

Yeah. There is a guard on the intake but it is big enough to suck him in and get stuck half way.
