Old world and new world cichlids contrasted
by Mukhtaar Bruno.

Cichlids are different in many ways including: origin and appearances. In this essay I will try to explain these differences. I'll start with the origins of N.W. and O.W. cichlids.
N.W. cichlids inhabit most central and south American waters from southern Texas to Mexico and Brazil. These waters are soft, acidic and contain large amounts of bog wood and aquatic invertebrates from water fleas to shrimp. Also some areas have large concentrations of plants whereas other areas are relatively bare.
Now we will look at the O.W. cichlids origins. O.W. cichlids inhabit the entire Great Rift Valley, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, India, and northwestern Africa. These waters hard and alkaline to neutral, contain large amounts of plankton, and also gigantic boulders covered in algae.
Now we will look at appearances. N.W. cichlids are often brightly colored and strikingly patterned. Also they have a unique body shape.

O.W. cichlids are usually darker and have a more solid color.

Also they have body shapes similar to many marine fish. These are the main differences between old world and new world cichlids, now which do you think is better?
