I have had a 55 gallon aquarium for over 4 years now, recently I became very interested in guppies. I have bought a significant amount of guppies some from petsmart and some from B & B. When I get them home and through their 15 minute waiting period within 24 hours they are getting mouth fungus and dying. I have three Long Finned Danios that never seem to be affected. I keep my water at 80 degrees, ammonia is 0, ph is 7.2, don't know what nitrite and nitrate is I don't have a way to test these. I have been treating my tank with melafix and pimafix for 5 days now and still my fish are dying. Please help.:c11:

Sorry, we are going to be unable to give a realistic solution without Nitrite and Nitrate readings, you can buy these tests in most pet stores or online. they look just like ur A and Ph tests.

Whats is your maintenance like? Water change schedule?

When was your last water change?I do up to 50% each and every week.
Sorry to hear about your fish!

Thanks for answering back so quickly. I do 30 to 50 percent water changes weekly using start right declorinator, and I use an Aqua Clear filter with biomax for 40 to 70 gallons and I have a 3 inch long bubbler on a 60 hz - 2.9 watt aerator . I noticed that it is mostly the female guppies and I have bought them from Pet Smart. Yesterday I started feeding them antibacterial foods and this morning when I turned on they're lights I didn't have any more dead all seem to be active, and I don't see any with the white mouth, today will be the fifth dose, do you think maybe because of the size of the tank it just took this long? Thanks for all your help

Hey there trickze!!! I live in Mobile too. HEHE. How cool. Petsmart has a batch of beautiful female guppies right now dont they? I thought they were males for a second. I'm not sure about the fungus though. I have certainly never had a prob with bb fish. I do see some dead ones in petsmarts tank from time to time. But it very well could be the batch of guppies. I have a friend who will be working there soon and she knows someone who is working there now in the fish dep. I could get her to ask if they have had any probs with them.

Sorry, not sure why it took so long.Did you remove your carbon first?Meds do have a shelf life and they may have been old.Who knows as long as the fish are better.:19:
Are going to treat the tank again or leave it for a day and do a water change and get new carbon to clear the meds out?

Thanks lovleeko that would be great and yes are you speaking of the females with the black and yellow tales? Also you say you have never had a problem with BB fish? Someone told me that they had problems with ick maybe they were trying to keep the good fish to themselves. Thanks NorthenGuy. Oh and guess what guys I am the proud Mom of 10 new babies. I have them in a seperate 5 gallon tank when they get a little bigger I will send pictures.:19:

K I'll get her to ask and I'll let you know. Yeah thats the ones I was talking about. They had some other colors that were beautiful too.

No I have never seen ick there! I have been getting my fish from b and b since I've been in the hobby and I've never had ick. Knock on wood. I wouldn't listen to that. They are so helpful at b&b. If there is anything wrong with a batch of their fish and they know about it they wont sell it to you. I was going to buy a turquoise rainbow the other day and they told me they were getting moved to the hospital tank in the back and thy would prefer not sell me one. It's not the first time they have been honest like that either. I would guess you wont get the same respect from petsmart. I wouldn't worry about b and b. Their good.

Oh yeah. He said they hadn't had any probs out of the female guppies. So maybe that isn't the prob. Again, I love b and b. I wouldn't worry about their fish. If they know something is wrong, they wont sell. :) Good luck with your fish. I hope you solve the prob soon.

I haven't had any luck buying guppys , they have mostly all died from several different things but all the other fish I have in the tank are great. All my fry have grown and have had fry themselves so its not my tanks.
Get a quarantine tank going and when you finally get a guppy that lives through the first few weeks than add it to your tank.
Guppy strains that are any good are almost never found in stores.Find a reputable breeder that will ship to you or that is close enough that you can pick them up!

I was going to say something along those lines too. I have never had one live more than six months.
And that's a long time if you ask me. And same as northern guy, it's not my tanks.
