No, the tank was not cycled. I figure if this betta dosent make it I will be taking that route next time. I am kinda new to this, just still researching cycling.

In that case, you need to test the levels everyday and make sure the A and NI are around 1ppm or less so it doesnt harm your fish while the cycle is establishing. You can bring the levels down via water changes.

When the cycle is established readings will look like this

A:1.0
NI:0
na:0

then

A:1.0
NI:1.0
Na:0

then

A:0
NI:1.0
NA:5

then
A:0
NI:0
NA:10+

When you see that you're done,these arent exact though and its all assuming you are waterchanging the A and NI down to 1.0

You can take a small water sample from your tank to petsmart they will test the water for free. Other shops may do the same.
