I know these are usually pond plants, but does anyone have any of these floaters in their tanks? I have a few and they're spreading like crazy under 2 40watt, 6 foot fluorescents.... the cichlids love to swim in and around the roots and I've been trimming off browning/dying leaves. Not sure if I want to keep them in the tank though. You can kind of see the root systems in the small crappy picture.

..... they also keep the middle of the tank shaded for my loaches and frontosas.
I did have an ich problem when the pellets were getting trapped by the plants and screwing my water quality, but I've since kept them in the middle and free from food.

I had water lettuce for a while,if its growing in yor tank, then its ok there. They will do a fantastic job of keeping your water cleaner by removing any nitrates.

I think hyacinths are rather cool and have seen other tanks with them. I don't know how much light it takes for them to bloom but what the heck, if you like them, leave them as they are. Rather a good idea if your other plants are low light plants to shield them.

I had some in my tank for a while and eventually had to get rid of them.
REALLY loved the look of the roots and plants but it seemed like the more it grew the more some of the air bubbles would start to rot away.
So i'd have a lot of new growth but also a lot of decay and i just got tired of trimming it all the time. I'll stick with my frogbit from now on....maybe try the hyacinths again when i figure out my algae problem.

thanks for the feedback... I'm going to keep them for now (it's been about 6 weeks), and we'll see if I get sick and tired of trimming them. I've been putting the new chutes into my 20 gallon fry tank.

I have access to some free water lettuce... the roots extend a bit deeper and they're a different color.. maybe if I like the hyacinths, I'll throw in a few of the water lettuce to have some different color roots in the tank. They seem to stay a bit smaller and not be such a nuisance also. Still not sure if I love the idea of these floaters.

I'm getting sick and tired of cleaning my filter tubes. The hyacinth roots keep clogging them up and impeding my flow. I'm unclogging the tubes every other day! I'm going to take some of the hyacinths out and just keep a couple for now.
