I have had this one for over a year and have never really known anything about it. He's about 4" long and was sold to me as a "Gold Spot Pleco". Anybody have any info on this? i'd love to know what it really is.

Any input is always appreciated!

I will definitely disagree here. I can say with full certainty that that fish is not L273. L273 looks like this (http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=3404).

There are way too many Rays on the dorsal fin for it to be a Pseudacanthicus species. I would have to say that fish is in the Pterygoplichthys genus, possibly L001/L022

After browsing a bunch of pics, i agree its L001.

Its easy to see why the petstore would confuse it with L273 though, as either some of them look VERY similar to L001, or there are alot of confused people on google, either is possible.

Yup, confused people, im getting gold spot pleco as L001 and L273....sigh i hate you google.

Good catch GB

Providing an accurate ID for the Loricariid family is extremely difficult since it is constantly changing. Fish that are in one genus one month could very well be in another genus the next month. The Loricariid family and the Callichthyid family are both an absolute mess right now. I really hope the ichyologists get it figured out soon.

I agree L001/L022.... I to hope they get the "L#'s" figured out - there are 2 completely different L-200's (as I'm sure with others, too) and it seems L001 and L022 are both the same fish, too... He is cute though! And doesn't get TO monstrous! I wish my common were an L001!

Thanks guys! I have always suspected it to be an L001, but IDing plecos can be a pain in the butt.

Thanks again,

I'd definately say it's a Pterygolichthys joselimaianus, you can tell if they belong to the Pterygoplichthys family if they have more than 10 rays in their dorsal fin.

Thanks for the IDing tip! I just googled Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus and that definitely looks like my plec!

I honestly forget...it's been a while and I have purchased many fish between then and now. It wasn't overly expensive though...maybe $10-$15.
