Went to to pet smart tonight. I ended up talking to a lady in the fish department somehow. I told her I was dealing with some ammonia in the tank. She told me to get some stuff that brings down nitrates. I told her the nitrates were good they were at 20 ppm and that i didn't need that. She told me that there should be no nitrate in my tank at all. And then argues when I told her otherwise.:14:

Hi,
I get that from time to time, with the large chain pet shops. But I never have problems with small well managed LFS's.

But please keep posting odd things staff say.

Now that would be funny! I have a friend who is about to get a job there. She wanted to get a job at the lfs. She does'nt know much about fish though. She said petsmart teaches you so she thought that would be her best bet. I laughed. Yeah, they sure do!

The lady would not listen to me. Everytime I would tell her you have to have nitrate in your tank she would say no, because nitrate is the product of ammonia. The same lady made me mad last time I bought fish there. She wanted to give me the newbie lecture even though I told her I knew the drill. She kept on and on. What is your tank size, dont overcrowd. She gave me the acclimating speach. Blah!

At least she is trying to help. Many will just sell you the wrong fish. Water changes will reduce ammonia without using chemicals but your tank has not yet cycled or you'd have no ammonia or nitrites. Nitrates are normal in fish tanks and should be kept at 20 or below, however. Too high nitrates can be reduced with gravel cleaning and less feeding.

I would buy no more fish until your tank has cycled.

Are you confusing nitrites with nitrates?

No I asked her if she meant nitrites. She just didn't know what she was talking about. And she was rude. She wasn't nice and trying to help me rather trying to be right. She is never very nice. I have had other experiences with her.

My tank was cycled but my cycle has been damaged. I'm thinking it is the fry in the tank. I'm trying to bring it down with water changes. Everyday you can find me there changing more water as usual considering I have two new tanks that have not cycled and then this problem. LOL

I wasn't buying fish. I can't afford fish after all the crap I've had to do to get my two new tanks up. :)

She is hard at study trying to learn. Which is good for her to do.

IMO you'll learn more from this site in a week than you will from working at petsmart for 10 years...or ever maybe. Refer her to the site, if you get 10 you get a medal :) ..I think i only have two, i need more friends. lol

I do the same thing, I think I referred hundreds of people yet only 20 something of them actually came on. People don't like to do what their told. Ignorance is bliss.

Nitrates at 0 all the time can actually be harmful. It causes all kinds of algae, cyano, and can really stunt plants.

LOL. Are you an "all expert" I think you referred me to this site once when I wrote you on all experts :) I put your name in when I signed up. It was forever ago. See I listen. LMAO! I don't ask my fellow AC all kinds of questions for nothing. It's funny to me how you always learn. I am a genius when it comes to what some people know about fish keeping and I get dwarfed with some more experienced keepers on here. You can know so many facts but you learn more knowing peoples experiences.

I bought a few bunches of anacharis and a few water wisteria from petsmart a few weeks ago. Asked how well they would grow under the stock lighting in my tank, employee said if i didn't want to increase my lightning I could try flourish excel. Some kid I think he was 13 or 14, jumped into the conversation and told me that flourish would melt the anacharis! He seemed to know what he was talking about, so I didn't buy it. Looked it up later that night online and sure enough the kid was right! It's really hit and miss with knowledge some of their workers have.

LOL, ya that was me! I think I put the forum URL and my username in my siggy.

I quit AllExperts though, too many stupid people asking stupid questions, not referring to you of course! You must have been one of the few that listened. :c2:

Really, they ask that many dumb questions? Oh you know your referring to me! I feel all dumb now. I'm just kidding. I just dug out the Q from my email just for fun. I ask why my male guppy was bugging the crap out of everybody in the tank because I didn't want to have fry so didn't want to get females. I had never had a guppy go all crazy on me. And check me out now with ten thousand fry in my tank messing with my nitrogen cycle. LOL. I still have never seen a guppy as crazy as him! He died recently. I had him for a long time.

Sorry, doesn't exactly ring a bell. I've been asked so many questions I can't even remember more than a half dozen of them. Sorry! I'm sure it was a great question though!

The kid is right, and wrong. Flourish excel does melt plants, especially fined leaved plants like anacharis, however it will only do damage when it is overdosed.
I use flourish excel on all my tanks, and I have anacharis in one of them. I dose more than is recommended and the anacharis is still alright. If you feel nervous you could build up to it, dose very little and build up to the recommended dose. Excel is an amazing product. I think that everyone who has a planted tank should use either Excel or CO2. The latter being preferred of course.

Ideally you should get a CO2 set up if you are going over 2wpg. Between 2-3wpg I would do a DIY Yeast set-up, over 3wpg you'll probably need a presurrized system, unless you want to run a dozen smaller generators. These numbers don't really apply if your tank is under 25g though.

I am a genius when it comes to what some people know about fish keeping and I get dwarfed with some more experienced keepers on here. You can know so many facts but you learn more knowing peoples experiences. LOL, I know what you mean. No matter how many books I read or how many hours I spend on various forums, there is ALWAYS someone out there that knows more than you thought was possible. On every forum there is 1 or 2 people that know everything.

Funny how often we bump into the same people on different sites, on different aliases, and not even know it.

Nice to see you again!

I'm so glad I found this site. I feel that most of my fish would be dead now if I was depending on the LboxFS for information.
Now I have a compass and direction and learn more every time I log on.

Thanks AC
