Is an Eheim 2217 sufficient to filter a 65 gallon high aquarium.?

The aquarium is CO2 fed, well lit, planted with about a dozen veil angels and assorted scavengers.

More then enough. I think the 2217 will do up to 159 gallons of water US

no. i would recommend the ehiem professional 2 or 3 for your setup OR (2) 2217's.--jeff

I have a 65 and a 2217. Was heavily planted, and it was fine for 2 years. Just got rid of the plants and I added a HOT magnum just to be safe Plants are natural filters. If your tank is heavily planted, the 2217 is fine, but make sure you change the media every year. I know it's expensive, ehfimech, ehfisubstrat. Tip: get ehfifix, it makes a great barrier between the ehfimech and the ehfisubstrat. You should clean the filter once a month.

Anyone else think Ehfisubstrat Pro looks like Coco Puffs?

in my 55g I have 2 350 penguin bio wheel filters and a fluval 304 canister filter. I would recomend both. Although I would have gotten a eheim if they had any around here.

thank you for the feedback. I have a second 2217 from another tank that is down right now. I'll set it up and see what happens.

Right now, I just don't think there is enough circulation. O2 bubble go straight up until about a 1/2 inch from the surface where they interact with the 2217's flow. The plants near the bottom show almost zero movement. You can tell there is some movement, but you have to stare at it to really see it...hence my query.

that's exactly why i recommended (2) 2217's

Sorry about my comment. I guess I didn't know enough to leave that kind of feedback. When I was doing my research, the Eheim 2217 classic says it can handle up to 159 US gallons. I was planning on getting that for my 90 Gallon tank but I guess I should reconsider since what they say isn't even true....or is it?

I have a bunch of flow in my 55g. with 3 filters and air bubble wands on each side, the bubbles make it to the middle of the tank.

it is a great filter but running 2 filters for your tank offers multiple benefits, 1. you can clean one filter while still having sufficient filtration and not affecting your cycle, 2. you can address circulation issues and make sure you effectively filter " all " of the water not just one area of your tank. I have my Eheim 2215 and my aquaclear 110.

this has all been great advice - I will install my second 2217 today.

Any suggestions on how the flow should go? The first 2217 is at the upper left sweeping across the tank from left to right.

What do you recommend should be the location of the return for the second filter?

thanks again!

place the intakes at each end on the back wall. place the out flows on the sides of the tank facing in towards the middle. this way you won't have any "dead" spots. in other words, place the second out flow sweeping across the tank right to left

The second 2217 did the trick - circulation is excellent and the clarity of the water improved dramatically - crystal clear.

Thanks all !
