Hello all :)

Im planning on setting up a low-light, low-tech 75G planted. I am going to have 4*32watt T-8 bulbs over the tank. I am going to use zoo med's tropic sun bulbs which are 5500K. which works out to about 1.7wpg. For filtration I am going to use an XP3 canister with a Whipser 40i placed on the opposite end to the return for some added circulation and Ill probably put some peat in it or some floss.

Plants I plan to have are C.wendtii, various Anubias species, Apon. crispus & natans, Java moss, Java fern, Red Tiger lotus, some Onion plants, and Marsilea quadrifolia.

I dont plan to use any CO2 injection, but I will probably supplement with Excel. I also plan to use AquariumPlants.com plant substrate and their Total Substrate Pellets which I have copied from their site contain:

Chemically Active Ingredients: Hydrated Magnesium sulfate, Potassium nitrate, Potassium sulfate, also trace amounts of; Cobalt EDTA, Copper EDTA, Iron EDTA, Magnesium EDTA, Zinc EDTA, Manganese sulfate, Sodium Borate, Sodium Molybdate, (Chelating Agent: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)

Physically Active Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3) Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (CaCO3) Calcium Sulfate (CaSO42H2O)

These fertilizer pellets are supposed to guarantee plant health and be all that is needed for healthy plants to thrive and you use 1 pellet per 3X3" square area where plants are located...and for 75pellets being only 11bucks and you only have to fertilize once per month it sounds like the perfect solution.

With this said, has anyone used the AquariumPlants.com substrate or ferts? Or how does this whole idea sound to you plant people? So far about the only plant Ive had real success with is a Fancy Plants Giant...but Id like to change that:14:

As for the lights, you should be pretty good with that. I've never heard anything of the aquariumplants.com substrate. If it was me, I would go with Fluorite. Works great. In addition to the pellets, I would also use Flourish. Maybe it's not nessecary but t can't hurt.

Thank you for your reply :) I had planned to use the Flourite but they state that their substrate works best with the ferts so I thought Id give it a try, but was curious as to if anyone else had used it before.

aquariumplant.com substrate is SMS, soil master select, a fired clay used on baseball diamonds.
It's not bad, but it's on the bottom of the list of plant substrates.
Check Lowes and Home Depot for Shultz aquatic soil, it's in the pond section, I got my Lowes to order some out of season.

For the money I think it's the best way to go.

Your effective lighting will be around 180 watts, T5 lighting with good reflectors produces about 50% more usable light than T12's

Thank you :) Would a flourite/gravel mix yield better results than the aquariumplants.com substrate? I had originally planned 3 bags of Flourite and however much more gravel was needed to give me a 2-3" bed. Or would laterite/gravel do just as well. Ive looked for the soil but would prefer to steer away from it as I plan to have a fair number of bottom dwellers. Also what are some opinions regarding the aquariumplants.com fertilizer pellets?
