Your 20 gallon will soon be too small for two angels. Also, your shrimp will get eaten and Tiger barbs are not only a fish that likes some of it's own with it, it will go after the angels fins.

I would also scrap the plans for a pleco in the larger tank. Pleco's can get huge.

Lady Hobbs, That is the reason I am getting the 55. The pleco would be a bristle nose or a pitbull. That is the reason they are in there. The Tiger Barbs will have the 20 to there own

That's ALOT of plants for a 55!

Trust me.. :)

Weed the list down to 3-4 different types of plants and get 2 each..

They will grow and reproduce fast..

And it'd be good to make one of them a foreground carpet plant, like tennelus or hairgrass..

doug z, What plants do you recommend? I really want dwarf baby tears as a plant.

Dwarf baby tears would be good, but according to all the plant profiles I've read you'd need high light (2+wpg of T-5 flourescents). So keep that in mind.

I can only base any advice on what I've read, as I only have hands-on experience with a handful of plants, myself (riccia, cabomba, stargrass, A. reineckii, tennelus, frogbit).

So keep that in mind, too.. :)

I put alot of research into my plant selection, tank set-up, and stuff though, and am happy to share it..

Before I can give you any ideas we'd have to know what your set-up would be..

Lighting, filtration, ferts/no ferts, C02, budget..

20 gallon went kapoot and every one died. I am going to be setting up a 29 g Reef tank soon.

12-20-2008, 04:15 PM
I have to recomend you spend some time reading up on reef care.

If you have trouble with a 20 gal FW setup your reef is going to be tougher to care for and will take ALOT longer to make it "established".

I'd run that 20 FW setup untill you can say you have it down, and not it went kapoot before you move on.

12-20-2008, 06:33 PM
yeah, i would read ALOT if you have a 20g freshwater crash, saltwater tanks are alot easier to crash and saltwater tanks can crash at 4, 9, or even 18 months old

Eather the filter or the heaterbroke and it killed the fish. I think is might be th filter after looking at it and finding a bucnh on cracks in it.

you filled the saltwater tank with RO water right?

reptile dude007
12-27-2008, 06:50 AM
Yes. It said salt water on the big plastic contaner. But I asked the owner and he said he will only use RO water when mixing salt water.

The black rock had alge all over it but a hich hiker nitrate snail have cleaned it up.

01-05-2009, 03:12 PM
whats in the filter? in saltwater tanks the live rock does all the filtering for you if you have enough, regular filters over time unless extremely well maintenanced will just be a huge nitrate factory

01-05-2009, 03:16 PM
Its going to be a sweet tank when it matures!:22:

Nitrate 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Ammonia 0.25
High Range pH 8.4

I think I'm ready for a fish now.

01-14-2009, 01:39 AM
if you have ammonia the cycle isnt done yet

reptile dude007
01-14-2009, 03:09 AM
Not to long ago it was 100 ppm.

01-14-2009, 04:33 AM
you still want it at 0 before you put fish in. Even that small amount can cause ammonia poisoning, especially in stressed fish from transportation.

01-14-2009, 04:43 AM
yeah and especially with delicate saltwater fish

I am going to make a 10 gallon sump. But I don't know how to get the water from the tank to the supm. Any ideas?

01-21-2009, 03:32 AM
overflow is the easiest

01-21-2009, 04:04 AM
Example of an overflow box (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3579+18357&pcatid=18357) this is what will take water down to a sump. You will want to get an overflow box rated for more gph hour then the return pump.

Thanks guys! How hard is it too make one of those? I'm going to make an order of Live rock from Liveaquaria. I am just going to make my filter into the sump since it is a 5 gal. I'm, going to make a nice sand bed, and add some LR rubble, then cook it at 500 degrees and serve with fries :hmm3grin2orange: .

Any ways The Ammonia have been 0ppm for a little while now and I promised my mom a fish for her birth day which was 12/28/08. She wants a clown fish.

01-22-2009, 03:44 AM
if you know how to work with acrylic its easy to make a overflow, but at $30 on ebay its kinda easier to buy one

reptile dude007
01-22-2009, 03:58 AM
Acrylic is easy. I think I will buy one though.

Hey guys! I'm getting a fish today along with a cleaner shrimp. Any Fish Ideas? I'm thinking a clown fish. Maybe a damsel but then I could only have damsels if I get the Damsel.
