I am really interested in starting up a group of tanks to grow and propagate different sepecies of plants in each. Since i am still learning all that is needed to know about fishkeeping i would like to know what would be the most effective way of filtering possibly 4-20 gallon tanks or more without using 1 filter per tank? any links or helpful suggestions would be great!

I don't see how. Just some small cheap filters will work if you are only having plants in the tanks. Will you be adding plant lights for all those tanks? If so, you might be better off, money wise, to go with a long breeder tank = 1 filter and 1 light.

hmm yeah i guess that would be a better option eh, maybe like a 48in breeder, and of course plant lights and DIY Co2

best way i can think of is get a overflow for each tank, have them draining to a large central sump with media in it, and have a large return pump with a quad PVC splitter to return flow to each tank
personally i would just get a 40g long, break it up into 4 12" sections with glass dividers, and drill a 3" diameter hole in each divider with a screen to allow water to pass through

What it will cost for several small tanks you get get the larger on, get some cheap shop lights and ta-da. And you'd also have room for fishies.
