Hello, I have 11 discus 3-5 inches. I was wondering how big do they have to get to breed? Is there a minimum size or age? Dave

Both, your larger ones may show signs of pairing soon. I think the females mature as early as 9 months and the males not until about two years.

Actually, males are capable of breeding as early as 9-10 months as well.

That is not what I heard from a breeder I was talking to recently, but if it has happened than it has happened. So yes, you could definitely be getting some pairs soon. How old are they?

Just to clarify where I got my info. I asked a similar question on Simply Discus a year or so ago and a breeder there told me he has had them breed as young as 10 months.

In 10 months they have gone from 2-2 1/2" to just 3-5"? What is your water change routine? What are you feeding them?

After 10 months that is still smaller then they should be.

(zfish) today i have discus eggs for the first time. I have six beautiful big discus and finally two have paired off. But...alas the eggs have been eaten or just died. I guess they will try again. do they need ..84 degrees-the fry that is to survive?

I've read that the temperature for discus should always be 86 but being off by a couple degrees probably wouldnt matter much

82F is fine.

They will take time to figure out how to do it right. When mine first laid eggs people told me one year or 12 batches or so before they figure it out.

i have set temp at 80 because i keep them with neons and cats. now in a 125 gallon the six of them stay together. The pair have taken over the left side of tank. i hope they don't fight. The eggs have mostly gone. I heard the fry though had to have a higher temperature so maybe i killed the eggs with keeping temperature at only 80. they have thrived in this temperature though.

(zfish) (zfish) (zfish) did your discus actually take a good couple of times before they were successful. i was thinking i would now take the pair and put them in a breeding tank. But then i have read that they need the threat of fish to keep them guarding and taking care of their fry. hmmm should i move them or leave them?:help:

Most people breed them in separate tanks. I have not heard that idea before. Really the other fish are a true threat and discus can't protect against everything. It is very possible for the other fish to eventually get the eggs or fry, especially at night.
