Hi and a question

Hi to everyone, cant wait to get started in this exciting hobby. My question is this, I was given a 55gal tank and some used equipment. The tank is in good condition but it has two holes cut on the back side near the top. Apparently the pevious owner was going to plumb in a sump. The holes are 35mm, about 1-3/8". Anyway, what can I do about the holes to make the tank useable and still attractive?

Certainly the safest thing to do is hold onto the tank until you are ready to mess with salt water.. Repairing glass in tanks is dangerous and i dont do it.
That or you repair the holes with wire screen and use it as a terrarium. I recently got a 20long that had a crack that was repaired and the tank seemed to hold water... but i opted to get some scorpions for it instead for safety's sake.

thanks Wild Turkey. It wouldn't hurt any thing to go ahead and use it for freshwater, would it? Could I use the holes to hook up an external filter? Does it matter about hole size?

You could always cut the section of glass out and replace it.Its always better to do the whole tank though.
A piece of glass or plexi over the holes would be a lot easier.After you do the repair,fill it and test it for at least 3 days.Make sure you clean it out really well!

you can find bulkhead fittings that screw together with rubber bushings to seal the holes
