I was in a f/s today not my local & they had a large tank with about 5
diffrent sorts of tetra in it with corys . Then in a large round bowl in the bottom was a male beta there was a net over the top of this bowl but a air stone & a few bits of plant is this ok or not i was,not impressed but the young guy said that the beta was fine in that small area . SUE:fish:

Wait, I may not be understanding right but, could the betta reached the surface area of the tank so he could get a breath of air or was this bowl at the very bottom of the tank with no way for the betta to reach the top of the tank? If it's the later then that is horrible! Betta's are labyrinth fish and have to go to the surface to get air sometimes, no matter how much oxygen is in the water.

Well you could buy them. Other than that, I don't see how it is your responsibility. Not worth getting too upset over it, there are bigger "fish to fry", if I may coin a phrase. :c11:

Buy a 5G, save a Betta.
I wonder how many of these fish die each day in LFS.
It's tragic. Something should be done.
Dogs and Cats have rights, why not this wonderful Fish?

Rescuing is a double edged sword...the more we buy, the more they ship in to replace.

Well done Sue!You have done more than a lot of others have.
All I can say is avoid that shop or start stocking tanks.

Every time I go to the LFS, I see 50 or more Betta in butter cups. More than I care to count are dead. I hear parents telling their kids the fish are just sleeping.
I'm in no way an activist, but this really does bother me. Monday morning after I drive my bus and deliver kids to school, I'm going to call the corporate office of the two box stores we have here and say something.
NG I wish I had more room to stock more tanks!!!! I would.

Exactly. Trust me, I know how hard it is to turn your back on an animal you can save, but all you are doing is rewarding the terrible shops and encouraging them to continue bringing in more of these animals to do that to.

Being a reptile lover, I see this a LOT, even with some of the more reputable pet shops.

You know it is interesting.....I am an animal lover - spend countless hours out on the trails with my trusty dog. She had to have her spleen removed last year due to a tumor, recovered fully, and is acting like a puppy again at age 11. I gladly paid close to $2,000 to save her. She is part of the family.

I have also been keeping fish for years. They are indeed beautiful and I take extremely good care of them. However, I must admit I have no great emotional attachment to them. If one gets sick or dies of old age, I don't spend a moment of sadness - I just flush and move on, so to speak. While I can be moved to tears at the neglect of dogs, cats, birds, reptiles....the same does not hold true for fish. Must be why I never gave those poor bettas a second thought. Darn, I'm cold......

You are right.
There is someone out there that supplies the fish. It's just a shame!
But I'm going to make the calls anyway.
Will it do any good???
I really want to hear the response.

I'd be really interested to hear what they tell you, if anything. Please keep us posted. I wonder if they really do listen to their customers, or will they try to explain it away? Good post....

Mrdrums,
I don't think you're cold, more like realistic.
I will post the response.

Apparently I'm not the only one that's said something. They are already looking into it. They assured me it wouldn't happen again. Sounds very much like an employee, will remove all dead fish prior to opening.
Fish deaths in stores I'm sure, is a part of the business.
It's just a shame to see them in those small containers with lids, they haven't much of a chance right from the start.

Very interesting. Sounds like a conscientious shop owner. You know, these fish come in big shipments...I wonder how many fish are dead on arrival, or how many die a day or two later. If you are going to own a fish shop, I guess you need to expect a certain amount of casualties.

Maybe if they really do fix the issue, they will have earned a new loyal customer. Something to be said for that.

I don't know if we'd really want to know how many are DOA on arrival, might be too depressing.

HELLO AGAIN ALL,
I have spoken to my local pets at home manager again 2day .
he has made some enquires into the shop with betta in bowl at the bottom of the tank. as it is an small retailer & not part of the chain of garden centers, he rung someone from the head office of center chain, & was told this shop was been run down ,as they have had lots of complaints about the state of there tanks & fish sold from them. so the center chain had not renewed the ground rent so i am in hope that this will be the last i will see of the poor fish in that awfull shed . i will go back to garden center in few months time just see for myself that it has closed it,s doors . so i was not the only 1 worried about the poor fish been kept in there . so RESULT 1 FOR FISHYS:19: (I HOPE) SUE

Way to go Sue, finding an injustice and doing something about it. You should be a politician!!!
Your story believe it or not is an inspiration to all of us who see abuse and haven't done something in the past. I shamefully, have to admit for not taking action for some of the things I have seen. Even if you don't get all of the results you're looking for,(and I hope you do) it's nice to see someone speak for the animals who can't speak for themselves.....great job.

Yes Sue good job.
I hope that the lfs here, will at least cut back on inventory to match demand.

I would go back to see if they are having a going out of business sale!
You might score a tank for cheap or whatever else they are trying to unload.:19:
LOL Just don't mention you had something to do with it.:laugh1blue:

I went back today, they had a piece of drift wood I want for my Serpae tank.
It's a big box store, so out of business won't happen.
As far as the fish dept. goes nothing much has changed. Nature of the beast, Me thinks!
I do not think I will buy anymore fish there, cups of salt in the tanks etc.. From what I'm learning via the forum, I just don't think the are doing a stellar job on the keeping of their inventory. Get it in get it out, seems to be the way of it.
I suppose they do expect a percentage loss, again nature of the beast.

That's a real shame.

I too have also seen some terrible conditions around here in the large-scale stores. Was in one tonight just looking(would never buy there) and of the roughly 18 tanks they had, at least half of them had a dead fish in it. Also, one tank of Guppies was almost completely infested with what looked to me like Ich. :(

It's a shame that sometimes locally these big chain stores come in and although they don't care for their fish nearly as much as the Ma and Pa smaller stores, they still run them out of business because everyone wants to save a buck :( Now i don't know where to go. guess ill just keep an eye on Petsmart and look for a winner.

thanks every1 ,.but it was,nt down to me that this store or shed i should say
is closing down it has been in the pipe line for a while i think . i think it must be down to the chain who own & run the garden center it is in, but will keep pop ping back in as ray said may pickup a few deals when it do,s close down .
