i just bought a Fiddler crab for my tank and did a quick look-up on a website. It said that they need brackish water and some land. It also said that the petstores usually keep them in freshwater tanks and recommend that buyers do the same. However, the article went on to mention that eventually they die if they aren't in brackish water? My store didn't tell me anything about this. Do you find this to be true about fiddler crabs? Anyone succesfully keep one in a freshwater tank?

They are brackish. Same as a lot of fish that the pet stores sell.
Dwarf Puffers
BumbleBee Gobies
Hermit Crabs
Fiddler Crabs need brackish water.

even bigger than the brackish water issue is that they need land. Although it can take months, they do evenually drown if they can't get out of the water.

I've had three fiddlers in my tank for over a year, and they're fine. I made sure that a bit of wood was above the water line, and they climb up on that when they need to. I haven't seen one of them for a while though, so she may have gotten out.. Anyway, they're great fun in the tank- especially when they do their little mating dance.

fiddler crabs live in tidal zones in the wild. that being said, they should be kept in brackish water

They can live in freashwater as long as they can get out onto land. But they will do alot better in brackish water

I used to keep floating logs in my aquarium for my crabs but they kept escaping every other day or so. i eventually found a habitat for them that you hook an air-line to and gives them a spot on the bottom of the aquarium to get dry. they have not even tried to climb the side of the tank since.

This is a example as to why you should ALWAYS research your fish/inverts before getting them. And always do your own research as people in a lot of fish stores, especially big box type sometimes will sell stuff to people without giving them all the info needed, due to not caring or genuinely not knowing. Im saying this, because thats how I got my crab a year ago. I thought they could just live in my tropical tank with no issues. Ive made lots of place for him to climb out of the water and he has a driftwood perch I put up where he can get out of the water. I do the best I can for him, but I cant make my water brackish due to my other fishies. I cant find another home for him, so I try to do the best for him I can. So, it was a prime learning example for me to RESEARCH what I buy!
