I have a photography class next semester and i need a digital SLR, looking for recommendations I would like to spend under $900 or so. I do not want a junk one i plan on using this for a few years after college.
I was looking at a nikon D60 and a cannon rebel ??????? cant remember it was about $800
Plus what is a good lens for taking pics of fish, something with a focal range from 6-20"
Any thoughts form experienced picture takers

From what I have always heard if you are looking for a good camera you need to look at Canon. That is what my dad (an amateur photographer) got me for my birthday last year and I got all my more recent pics with. Mine is not an SLR, but he was as happy as a little kid when he came home with his SLR the first day they were available.

I've heard lots of good things about the Cannon 40D. They are supposedly one of the best DSLRs available. Another friend of mine does a lot of photography professionally and he really likes his Nikon.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel Xsi (450D) That I'm quite pleased with.
You should ask Songuru, he's a Pro

There is a battle between the Nikon/Canon users as there is with PS3/Xbox360
The more serious and who get paid for a living photographers I know go with either and will both argue which is better :c2:
So basically they are both very very good.... ideally go to a photography shop and play about with both to see which one you like better in your hand! Another nice thing is to check out lenses you would be interested in in the future and see who offers these cheaper.
I have a Canon 40D and Digital rebel Xsi and am happy with both....

Simple what do you want to shoot.....?
Press,Portrait,Studio,Candids = Nikon
Everything Else = Canon
Basically it boils down to glass. On average in the entry level Nikon has the sharper glass, but in the pro level this goes away. One of the sharpest fastest lenses on the market is the 70-200mm F2.8 by Canon.
The best thing to think about is what do I want to take pictures of or what do I take the most pictures of? Go back and look at your last 100+ pictures what are most of them of, throwing out birthday parties and such unless that is what you enjoy.
Personally I find Canon to be easier to use and a more versitile platform as far as what you can get for the camera and do with the camera. Canon is also ahead of the curve. Nikon just now came out with their first full frame sensor Canon is into it's 5th generation. Nikon on the other hand when they make a new camera is usually in the soccer mom catergory, where you are looking, a more solid camera.
Personally I would go Canon and spring for the XSI, but if you think you want to shoot people in a studio then go Nikon. I personnally shoot sports/weddings/wildlife/aquarium so I run a Canon.
