Hi all

I've just found a dead danio on the gravel of my aquarium. When I took him out, I saw he was split down the middle, from just behind the gills to the anus. It looks like he has been gutted and I've no idea what may have caused this? My first thought was something sharp in the tank but there's nothing I can see that could have done that, it is a very clean slit.

Any ideas?

It very likely happened after the fish died. What else is in the tank?

Yes, almost certainly that was after it died, that is what other fish would eat first. He wouldn't be able to do it to itself on decor or anything like that.

Definately from the other fish after it died.It is also something you may see at most fish stores after they get new stock.
Fish eat fish!

Thank you all for the replies. This happening after death makes sense. I have various Barbs and a couple of gouramis in the tank.

The gills, 'innards', and eyes are typically first to be scavenged. Depending on what type or quantity of fish you have remaining this can occur fairly quickly.
