Has anyone had any success with Liquid Fry food? I have been thinking about breeding sparkling gouramis, or dwarf gouramis, but I don't want to raise live food. I bred bettas once, but I had a zero survival rate, because I couldn't get food the babies could eat.

I have heard they feed nitrates more than the fry. I have heard they sell frozen brine shrimp (just born) so they are small enough for most, they just don't move. I haven't used them because the only stuff I have bred were big enough for Hikari Guppy Food. I would think that if you were really conservative in the amounts you feed it may be fine, or at least good enough to get a few successful fish out of the project.

I have had great success with a egg yolk paste. You can make a protein cloud for them to swim through and they eat little tiny pieces. I can give you the recipe.

That would be great :)

I have used it for baby bettas. I also have use the frozen baby brine shrimp and the egg yolk paste. And I raised more than 40 bettas to adult.

For the egg yolk paste it is simple:
1. Hardboil an egg or two
2. Remove yolk from egg and discard white. (or eat it)
3. Mix yolk with water until it makes a thick paste
4. Use a toothpick (or something else small) and get a little yolk paste on the end of it
5. Stick the toothpick in your tank and swirl it around making a little protein cloud for the fry!

Good luck with them!

I haven't set the gouramis up to breed yet. I wanted to make sure it was feasible to do so. I am also thinking of getting actual Croaking Gouramis to breed. I imagine the the Sparkling gouramis I have would have "microscopic" fry! They are tiny fish as it is!

The egg yolk will be perfect for very tiny fry.

With the platy fry I have always used frozen BBS (baby brine shrimp) it is quite small and they had no problems with it....I would guess they are around 1/4 inch at birth. Another small frozen food is daphnia that I have found. Also, within usually a week they can handle flake if you just run it thru the food processor or take about a tbsp in a plastic bag and let someone roll it around to crush it up real fine. Feeding several times a day with fry is also important.

Great reminder kimmers. Feed your fry a lot. I fed mine about 5 times a day (in sensible portions)

For my platy and convict fry all I started them off on Hikari Guppy Food. It is a very small pellet, almost a powder. They had no problems with it.

I have raised lots of fry over the years. Everything from Guppies to Kribs, but the only one I had trouble with were the Bettas. If my Gouramis breed, I want to be ready for it. Thank you all for your help. I feel that if I do have fry, I'll be able to help them.
