This might be a silly question, but is there any kind of fish who like to live in an aquarium without any plants? Maybe some hiding places made of rocks etc, but no plants?

There are no silly questions!

The answers are that there are a lot of such fishes. Almost all larger cichlids for example, well almost all larger fishes period and then of course there are Malawi cichlids that you inquired about in another tread.

Do they prefer a green free aquarium, or are they just okay with it?

It doesn't matter much to them a slong as there are open swimming spaces. They will however eat and/or destroy most plants.

I thought the Malawi NEEDED plants to destroy. Natural behaviour, you know. But if they're fine without them that's much better.

Okay. Well, I rather feed them other vegetables than expensive aquarium plants. ;-)
