I have a brown, stringy algae growing on some of the plants in my cycling tank. I thought diatoms at first, but from what I'm reading they aren't stringy. Is this likely a hair algae? I can post pics later if needed.

URGGGGGG!!!! i hate string algae!
So hard to get rid of - without chemicals.
Have you got any algae eating fish, bristlenoses are pritty godd but may end up killing the plant once the algae is gone, as they keep eating!. Otocincluses are good, they should clean it up, but i don't know if they like string algae or not.

Is your plant heavily planted or not really? cos algae usually grows because of excess nutrients and light (or light that is too low intensity), so you could try to remove any sunlight, or feed the fish less, so the algae dosn't get the excess nutrients. More plants can sometimes be good as they will use up the excess nutrients.

If you really really wanted to you could use cemicals . . . i guess, but i don't recomend it!

Hope this helps.
