View Full Version : What smaller fish can be stocked with JDs and an oscar?
The title says it all. I really would like some smaller schooling fish in my oscar and JD tank. Someone told me barbs should be ok.

personally i wouldnt add anything more, that stock will need at least a 90g or better yet a 125g
When I first got my oscar I read that they were good with barbs. I bought 3 tiger barbs with him... he ate them in the first week.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I read that on the info tag at wal-mart, and maybe they meant tinfoil barbs, which they didn't sell :ezpi_wink1:
But in my experience of feeding live fish, it's the oscar I would tailor to... the feeders usually hide near the jacks because they are so nonchalant about their presence. I don't think that is the norm though from what I've read.
additionally, from someone with two jacks and an o in a small tank... start planning early for your upgrade. one day they are all happy and the next thing you know they are all up in each other's business because they grow so freakin fast!

No small fish can live safely with an oscar.Any fish that will fit in its mouth is considered food!
If you want a jd and an O to live happily, they can't see each other all the time.Thats why a bigger tank is needed. They need room and their own little territory to call their own!
Good luck!
Do you have any pics of these beautys?
Giant Danios are about the smallest fish I would put in a tank with an Oscar and JD's. But I don't think I'd put anything else in a tank that size.

A 36gal tank is too small for one jd let alone 2 with an O you need to upgrade tank size before you think about adding fish. For those three you will need at least a 90gal a 125gal would be better.

Thats the plan. They are very young and can stand to be in the 36g for a little while longer. I do have a large upgrade in mind for the near future.. as in asap. =)

If you get say a 150 gallon you could look into something like the 2 JD and the 1 O and then also get a school of tinfoil barbs or silver dollars or clown loaches. They get a good size and are all schooling fish. Bala Sharks also...
You'll be needing alot of filtration on your tank, oscars produce tons of waste and so do JD and IME, barbs aren't the cleanest fish either ;)
