Very good link... Thanks... though I would assume that most of us reading this post (or the link, for that matter) are already sensible enough not to support those horrible practices...

It sounds like its getting out of hand. They probably have been expirimenting on all fish. The ones people have seen are just the successful ones er the ones that havent died yet!
Its a sickening practice!

Good find Algenco. Some people can't tell which fish are dyed. I think they are obvious and stick out like a sore thumb. Generally by the time we see them, their colors are already fading, blotchy and they are ugly!

Thanks for posting this link. It's important for all responsible members of the Aquarist hobby to be aware of these.

I've actually seen the blueberry sunset gouramisas well as laser etched ballon mollies in pet stores( pet supplies plus)...hideous! the needle mark left behind is huge. petsmart may not be the best pet supermarket but at least they won"t sell dyed fish. well at least no in ohio.

Typical newbie question but bear with me, where did this whole trend start, dyeing of fish. Is it done for status, having a "unique" coloured fish?

I've always wondered if my white tetras where dyed/injected. When I got them (from the local markets about 3 years ago), one had a distint pink line and the other purple. The purple has since died but I still have the "pink".

Most likely yes. White skirt tetras are a frequent dying target, and I'm not aware of any natural way to get a white/black/albino skirt tetra pink or purple.

I could be mistaken, but I believe it started, and is still mostly performed, in Asia. (yeah that's a real precise answer, huh?) Many people are interested in colorful, unique looking fish without knowing or worrying about what has been sacrificed to get the fish that way. For that reason, fish such as this turn a tidy profit, so the practice continues.

Why can people be so cruel? It should be illegal to dye fish. The site is good, some of those fish I've never heard of. The pics won't show on my computer though and when I google the fish it's not there.

The white tetra is often one of those targeted for dying purposes. Even those not dyed appear pinkish because you can see the blood in their veins. I also had some several years ago but they remained quite pink with never any color loss so I don't think they had been dyed. Hard to tell on them, tho.

They are generally named strawberry tetra, blueberry tetra, grape tetra, or simply mixed fruit. The dyed ones look so darned fake I think it would be pretty obvious and the dye begans to go away generally before they can get sold and they're just plain ugly within a short time.

Hmmm, I've had my tetra for 3, maybe 4 years now. The colour has never changed or faded. Maybe it's just its normal colour?!

The purple one must have been dyed though. Could explain why it died. :(

They are genetically altered with I think it is jelly fish DNA . That is where the color come from. They will breed true, but it is illegal to sell any offspring as the are copyrighted.

Yep I agree, but how does someone enforce something like that?

They do the process of making them glow so they can copyright the species variation.

Perhaps a stupid question, but, they don't do that kind of thing to goldfish, do they?
