You can also feed them vinegar eels. Lots of Betta breeders use these more than anything.

Here (http://sunshinebettas.googlepages.com/cultures) is a place where you can buy them. They are inexpensive.

I would use vinegar eels. Most recommended by top Betta breeders.

Except where it says add the apple, don't. It makes the vinegar/apple cider dirty and you will have to change it more often. They do fine without the apple. And if you want a really good culture it will take about a month. I have had mine for a while now and I have tons of them! But if you need some fast food for the fry only allow them to stay in there for a couple weeks. That reminds me, I have fry that I need to feed. I have had these eels in their container for about 2-3 months and I have a lot of them. I hope it is enough to feed my fry for a while though.

It said that I need to obtain a vinegar eel starter culture from a fish store or your local fish club is it necessary?

Yes. Without the starter culture you will just have the vinegar and apple cider. No eels. They are very inexpensive. You can get one online for under $10 shipped.
