I noticed this morning that our recently purchased clown is showing signs of fin rot. He's mising part of his tail and is looking like something is wrong with his slime coat on one side. We've only had him a week and all water parameters are normal. Is malifix ok for use in saltwater, or is something else recomended

Its recommended to never medicate in a show tank. You should move your clown to a QT tank then medicate. If you have a bottle of it lying around, it should state on the bottle if it is okay for saltwater use. [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

We have the api and it does say marine and reef safe after taking a closer look at the bottle. We don't have a qt tank setup yet, and I know its a noob mistake, but I'm working on that tonight. He's our only fish and I was planning on getting a qt tank before I added anymore.
Looking at him closly he looks more like he was attacked, or got stuck between some live rock, rather then fin rot, but I could be wrong. His back half on both sides looks scraped up, as well as the top part of his tail fin is missing. The pics are a little blurry, but you can see the scrapes down his side, and I'm almost certain they weren't there yesterday. His tails in much better shape then the pic shows. He's acting normal and eating fine.[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

After much research, I found out last night he had marine velvet, and I think he had it when we got him. He had a slight, very small discoloration on his side, that I thought was normal when we bought him. I think he died during the night becasue he got drastically worse since my last post, but I can't find him anywhere, I've moved rocks around and can't find a body. Is it possible that the CUC and worms took care of everything?
I know this could have probably been seen and treated earlier if I had a qt tank, and I've learned from my mistakes, and will be setting it up tonight. I'm waiting atleast a month if not longer before i add any other fish, and will be going back to where I bought it and see if they will do anything, so for now its gonna be just corals and inverts.
edit: I found him on the back side of the powerhead. I'm gonna freeze hime and take him back to the LFS

I think they will take him, their pretty decent down there, and I know the owner. The first clown we bought from them lasted a month, until it decided it didn't want to be a fish anymore and tried to fly, but that one was at the store for over a month, and we watched it every week, the one that just died was only there for a week.

Sorry about the loss of your Clownfish. I hope the rest of your tank does okay, along with any future fish you plan on getting.

Thanks tigerbarb, everything else in the tank are doing ok so far. I'm doing a water change tonight, although him dieing had no affect on water quality, but I think I found him early enough. I'm gonna wait atleast a month before I add another fish, to make sure the rest of the tank does fine. By then I hope to have a sump up and running. I'm all done with clarkii clowns. Next clown is gonna be a false pecular or ocellaris.

I just called the fish store, and they have a no return policy on saltwater...like every other place in town. Atleast it was only $15.

I froze the clown in hopes I could return him for a refund, but that fell through. Could I post a picture of the body, or maybe pm a picture to someone to confirm 100% it was marine velvet? I wanted to ask before putting up a picture of a dead fish.

feel free to PM me
that sucks about the no return, the reef store i go to quarantines all fish before they go for sale, and they have a good return policy.
