I have a male Betta in a 2 gallon tank. Lately I've noticed some black stuff on the things I have in the tank. It almost looks like charcoal. Last time I cleaned the tank I scrubbed it off but it has come back. Any idea what it is and is it harmful to my fish? Thanks for your help.

Does it stick to your plants and wall and stuff?

I get this stuff too. I am not sure what it is but my otto eats it up like crazy so it must be some kind of algae. Does it look like the stuff on my plants?

Yeah, it's on the plastic plants and the plaster cave in his aquarium. I'm guessing it's some sort of algae but I don't know what's causing it. I clean his tank frequently and it's just started to happen lately.

Probably algae. It's a good sign when you have algae.

How long do you leave your lights on every day?
How much direct sunlight does it get?
Just take out your decorations and plastic plants and wash them.I do it in the sink under the tap in warm water. If you use any detergents rinse extremely well and redecorate.
Its not part of the bio system so you do not have to use the water change bucket.
