cotton string would probably rot, try a elastic or fishing line

That's the idea, Cocoa. You tie the Java Moss down on driftwood, and by the time the thread decays, it'll be attached and start spreading over the wood. Be at least a month before the thread is almost gone.

I wouldn't recommend using fishing line, as I've heard of people who have tied it tightly and then somehow the fish still got tangled in it.. Not a pretty sight..

So cotton or wool or a rubber band is good:)

I recently got some java moss myself, what I used to "tie it down" was some nylon mesh, its big enough that the moss will be able to grow out of it, but small enough that no fish parts will get stuck in it.. The nylon mesh I got from the dollar store, was a large laundry bag. Been using it with riccia as well. I take a large flat stone, put some riccia or java moss on it, then cover it with mesh, then I tie the backside of the mesh together with a fishing line or use a nylon tie. The riccia seems to be growing well.

Oh just remembered another thing some people use is those soap luffa things, you can cut the sewed up end open and you'll have meters of mesh nylon to use.

If you are tying it to something that it can not take hold of, like a filter intake, using fishing line. If you are tying it to something that it can take hold of, like driftwood, use thin string that will disintergrate over time.
