I'm on the hunt for BBA in my tanks but has some questions first.
1. is this not deadly to the animals? shrimp and fish?
2. I know i use a syringe to dose but what amount is safe and in what percentage?
3. hydrogen peroxide is the stuff you get for cleaning wounds right? any special kind i need to get?

If you do a search, I think Algenco posted about hydrogen peroxide. If you are spot dosing with a syringe, shut the filter off or turn the flow down so that what your are aiming to hit, gets hit. I believe any food grade hydrogen peroxide will work, normall sold in a 3% solution. Here's one link ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]).

So the H2O2 you use for washing wounds isn't good?
Never heard of food grade but i guess i'll do some more research.
I got the stuff in the brown bottle for washing wounds so that's why i ask.

That will work.

Yes, the hydrogen peroxide to disinfect wounds (3% solution) will do. I have used it and works really well on BBA. I dosed 10 mL in a 30 gal tank directly on the algae with a syringe and it immediately goes pink, but next day it is still there, so you might need to teat for several days in a row... Turn off your filter while you are dosing and keep your light off for a few minutes. Then turn the light back on (you'll see some bubbles indicating that the hydrogen peroxide is decomposing) and then turn the filter back on...

The key to H2O2 treatment of BBA being successful is early detection and action. It does work very well even on bad outbreaks but you have to use a good bit of it for it to work. The sooner you catch the BBA the easier it is to treat. If possible, lowering the water level in the tank so that the BBA is out of water and then soaking it with H2O2 works very well.

So...what was this stuff supposed to do?
I spot treated on the few patches of BBA that i had. It bubbled, two days later the spots turned pink...now a few more days later they returned to their original color. Only thing i noticed is they're much smaller in size. Like i gave them a buzz cut or something.

Keep treating for a few days. It works but do not expect all the algae to disappear completely right after only one session...

Im Bill in the bottom of this article.
Use 3% standard and do not go more than 3ml per gallon. Give it while the light will be on for 5 or more hours.
This article is documentation of my first attempt. I have used this method many other times. I find the 2ml / gal is a good rate.

This wouldn't work for me. My BBA is on my vals and hygro's and to spray each leaf would take days. I guess I will have to use the Excel and risk the life of the vals. I did hear in The Planted Tank that the vals will die but will grow back "eventually" and once grown back don't seem to be effected by the Excel as much.

Hobbs, both Algenco and I have treated BBA by adding H2O2 directly to the water column, no spraying involved. When I did it I used a medicine dropper and squirted it directly on the BBA or in the general area of the BBA.

yes, I use a 10 ml syringe with a short piece of airline tubing attached, slowly apply the H2O2 to the affected area, it will begin bubbling within seconds

So, lower the water level......spray with peroxide.......let set for a bit then just fill the tank again? How often?

I only do that when I'm doing a WC, the rest of the time I turn off the filters and just use my syringe to squirt the H202 on the affected area, wait 5 minutes and turn the filter back on
