My boyfriend wants to start breeding fish again (used to breed guppies as food for some of his fish until those fish died then he stoped breeding them) and wants something easy but doesn't want guppies and also wants something that doesn't need a huge amount of room can fit in a 30 gal or smaller. He has three 30 gal, one 20 gal, and five 10 gal tanks with filters, heaters, all that stuff.

platies or mollies would be fairly easy to breed. If he wants to get a little more advanced as far as fish, convict cichlids are easy to breed. Your best bet would be to buy 6 very small convicts and then wait for two of them to pair and then remove the other convicts either back to the store or to different tanks. Keep in mind that the convicts should be in a large tank preferably 40g or bigger. But a breeding pair would be okay in a 29g. The mollies and platies would work in the 10g.

Some killies are also fairly easy to breed and a lot of them don't need more than about 20 litres. Nigerian killis are prolly the easiest to breed and the hardiest, and there's also the clown killi.

Convicts. All you need is a male a female and water.

If you can find any Herotilapia multispinosa "Rainbow Cichlid" they are a cool little fish that would do good in a 30. heres a link for you also.

I agree with convicts. You could also try kribensis though.

Rams are fairly difficult to breed, and even harder to pair. Not impossible, but surely not an easy fish.
