View Full Version : Plecos

I'm interested to know how much Plecos sell for around you. In all the LFS I have been to (I have at least 20 near me) the cheapest I have ever seen a pleco is $90. That's for a common one. I often see them for around the $180-$190 mark. Now the reason for the question is I read a lot of people on here buying them for like 5G tanks - with the price they are here no one buys them unless they are really keen on them. So how much are they where you are?

common plecos here are about 3 bux...

Yea I could probably get a common pleco for $3 or less probably below $1 if I really wanted to. Some of the more rare plecos can get expensive. My bristle nose was $15, i've seen green phantom plecos at my LFS for around $60.

Out here common plecos run $1-$3 for small fish and usually the LFS will have one or two monster sized ones (no doubt outgrew people who were unprepared to house them) for around $20-$30, depending how bad they want to get rid of them. I got my small albino veiltail bristlenose for $12, but I've never seen them for sale full grown. The most expensive pleco I've seen locally was $60 for a gold nugget. I was interested but not willing to pay that.

When i see the kind of prices in other countries for fish,it scares me.
Back here in India(where i would've thought the price for tropical fish should be more),it seems sooooooo dirt cheap.
I picked up 12 Discus(6 Blue Diamonds and 6 Marlboro's,2 inches) for about US$ 52/-.
Common Pleco's for about US$ 3 a pair(3 inches).
Black Ghost's go for about US$ 6 a pair for 3 inch size fish.
Clown Loach for about US$ 10 a pair (3inch)
And so on.......
Man i feel so lucky to get these fish so cheap.

Aaahhh makes sense now! I was thinking what are these people thinking buying a $90 fish for a 5G tank. But if they are only paying a couple bucks I can understand why they do it.

commons- $2 for a small one, $30 fullgrown
dwarfs (bristlenose, rubberlips, etc)- $5-$10
rarer ones- $50-$500

small common pleco 1.95
big pleco 4-7" 12.00 roughly depends on lfs
royal plecos anywhere from 25-50
basically the bigger they get the more expensive they get except for common plecos if brought private and not through a lfs
tip: everything expensive in the uk!!!

If I travel 2 1/2 hrs I can get them half price.
Plastic plants from $6- $25 each!

Wow seems like there's a bit of a difference in prices between us all!!
Bettas here are usually about $9
Oscars I've seen range from about $10 for a 4cm - to over $100 for a full grown one.
Guppys are usually only $3-$4 max. Tetras around $2.50
I've seen sailfin and gold nugget plecos for $240 - they were big though.

I want a salt water set so bad:18:

That is nice! I like the way salt water POPS!!:c3: Wicked colors!

10-20-2008, 01:17 AM
Yep Cocoa highly illegal!!! Especially from the reefs - if caught it would be big time fines and possible jail time. Very protective of our reefs over here. Thankfully!! Otherwise they won't be around much longer.
Apparently I've been told that I can't even go into the nature reserve to get rocks. I was on a work function the other day trekking through and found some great rocks - but when I was going to go get them I was told I can't. So yeah we're pretty strict....
