I'm starting an African tank and I know I want kribs, but I also want another fish to occupy to top levels. I would like it to be from western Africa. Are congo tetras a good choice?

Congo's get too large for a 30 gallon to keep in a school...they grow to 4 inches. They really are more for the larger tanks lot's of folks will argue though as they are listed for minimum 30 gallons :hmm3grin2orange:

See, here's the problem. Half the sites I read say, "put them in at least a 20 gallon." The other half say, "nothing less than 55 gallons will do." Maybe I should go for something smaller. I looked at all the African tetras on that fishbase site. The Yellowtail, Jelly Bean, sharptooth, and Elongated Turkana Robber are smaller, from the right area and peaceful. But then, they don't look as cool as the congo, and the congo is readily available. Maybe I should try it and see what happens, but I don't like taking that kind of attitude with a living creature. I'm stumped. :ssad:

I agree with madam Jess. Congo tetras are a schooling fish, and for a decent school, you'd need a tank at least 6'x2'. Beautiful species, though, and well worth buying a large enough tank to keep them in.

how about eastern south america? I have 4 buenos aires tetras in my 30 gal and they are awesome. Get along great with my other fish, though i would like to make thier school larger, i have to wait until my stock"thins out" a bit as i'm at what i think is a full stock level now. Very cool fish and very sharp looking when fed quality foods.
