How come my guppies always die before giving birth?
My water is testing great and all my other fish are thriving.I keep the heat up at 78 and they have a kinds of hidey holes and a ton of plants top and bottom.I took the only male i have and put him another tank so there is no nipping going on.
I really like guppies but they must hate me:27: .All the fry I have came in with adult fish when I bought them. They are all doing great!
All my other tanks are thriving as well.:c3:
Maybe I should switch to sword tails or gouramis!:c2:
Maybe I'm jinxed or something!!

have you considered attaching a breeder to the side of your tank and putting the heavily pregnant ones in there??...It really does help....thing is..the other guppies chase the one giving birth around sooo much...they are after the free food...hidey holes..or no hidey holes... *s*

I do have a plastic floating breeder and I have watched 2 females about to explde die before giving birth. They were in the trap for 2 and 3 days. With both ,i woke up looked in my tank and they were dead. Not at the same time, these were a week apart.
I'm so confused frustrated!

That is odd. What are you feeding them?

Flake food ,bloodworms, and the odd crushed pond snail.I am only losing the mothers when they are about to pop!
Maybe its just the place where I got them.I got 2 more the other day from that store and 2 from another.I put them in my 3gal when I got home and 1 of them started to show signs of fungus.A few hours later when I had the chance to look again,it was positive that she had fungus. I took the other 3 out had to put them in my com. tank.A few hours later I could see the shape of a saddle on another 1,into the 3 gal. Again a few hours later another 1,again into the 3 gal. It has been 2 days and 2 are dead.Everyone in my com. tank is doing fine. The last female looks great,I hope!I have been treating the 3 gal with daily w/cs with salt and miracine(only about 6 drops).
I guess i'll just see what happens. It just pisses me off when I buy fish just to medicate them and watch them die.:c11:
Im sorry NG i wish i could help... :( good luck

Hopefully you will have better luck. Are the males you are using exceptionally large. I know with most animals if the male is large & the females are small= death.

I only have one male and he is in a different tank.
Probably just over stressed from the bumpy ride on Ontarios wonderful highways! At least thats what I am hoping for. It could just be the lfs gets them from a supplier with a lousy strain in the first place.

I was kinda wondering that as well.
They could be dying from the stress of being put in those little breeders.
