I setup a tank with live rock I purchased from a store in my area, I purchased 3lbs of white rocks that look like dried up sponge and about 5lbs of a rock that was green and purple it looked painted on. now its been about three or four weeks now, the rocks has this brown aglae looking stuff around 3/4 of the rocks (?) is that good or bad.

welcome to the ac...you can post all yor saltwater tank questions in the saltwater section...and the experts there will help you ...one of my fav people to read up is cocoa pleco...he also does the saltwater thingie..

Welcome to the site. Had you done any research before setting the tank up? The algae is pretty normal for a new tank. Keeping a saltwater tank can prove to be a pretty complicated affair especially if you haven't researched enough to be prepared. Can you post any of the other specs of the tank? Check out the Saltwater forum here when you have a chance. There's some great information posted and also some great readings that you can pick up and check out.

I have a 30g tank with about 15lbs rock, I also have Damsel and a crab will they cause a problem?

The purple is good, its most likely coraline which is a good healthy sign
the diatoms, not so awesome, and pretty ugly. however, your tank is new and its expected to get a month or two of it. keep up with water changes and get/keep using a skimmer and it will pass
