when putting styrofoam between the bottom of your aquarium, and the stand how thick a piece should it be? should you use the stuff they use on the sides of houses? that comes in 4x8 sheets,or the stuff that comes in a roll thats about 1/8th of an inch thick? thanks

It depends on the size of the tank and the type of stand. What kind of hardware are we talking here?

You only need the styrofoam if your floors are a bit uneven. On cement floors or floors you know are even, it isn't necessary but I would think the kind you use on houses would be just fine.

Put a Level on the stand. As long as it and the floor are solid and level, you won't need the syrofoam. If in doubt, use it.

If it is in your home on the floor and your stand is even you should be alright. Welcome to AC also.

The best thing to do is to dry fit the aquarium in the stand. If you see any gaps between the tank and the stand, add a layer of styrofoam all around the base. A couple of layers of the 1/8" stuff should be fine if you have any small gaps.

I don't know what you have planned for your stand, but I would strongly suggest waterproofing and sealing the wood. It tends to be humid around an aquarium (astounding isn't it!) so if you don't seal it, you will have fungus problems. Also, don't forget cross braces on your stand, the last thing you want is for the stand to colapse when you fill the aquarium with water.

Cripes. I wish I could waterproof the wall behind the aquarium! From priming and priming and priming the bloody filter to get it going, I always have water running down the wall. grrr

Hello Im building a stand too. Well me and dad are. Its looking pretty good all we have left to do is the doors and staining it. Mom actually said I can keep the tank downstairs too. At first she said i couldnt but now that she saw the tank and my setup I think she likes it.

When you are done with your stand show us some pictures of it. Ill show some of mine too.
