Limestone Raising PH

So I Was wondering something about the limestone, I realize it raises PH in the water but will it raise it to a certain stable level, or will it raise it to dangerous levels I have a 50 Gal I Was gonna put about 5 or 6, 10 - 20 inch pieces in and add some Texas cichlid's or Jack Dempsey's.
