I tell you, I thought the tank was cracking! The sound was like glass rubbing together. A gritting clicky noise.
Turns out 2 of my sparkling gouramis have paired of and are building a little nest out of algae they steal from my dwarf gourami. The male was croaking away last night. I have forgotten how loud it was!
If anyone has a smaller tank, I highly recommend these guys.

i dont have any experience with them, but they do sound like awesome fish. I would love to hear their croaking noise too. How big do they get? like 5"?

1" to 1"1/2 tops. They are the dwarf version of the croaking gourami. I have 3 in my 10g.

Around $3 Canadian. I got a deal on mine, 4 for $4.

Too cool abbeys mom....I never get to hear my sparklings because the tank is too large. I haven't been lucky enough to have any of the 5 pair up either. Maybe I will try a separate 10 gal for them in the future to have all to themselves.

I have never heard of a talking fish, out side of channel, blue, and flathead catfish.

They sound very cool.

Trust me Kimmers, you'd hear them. I was sitting 20' away. They make the noise near the surface of the water. They may just have too much competition in a larger tank.

Is it a croak similar to a frogs?

No. But the only frogs I've had are Green Tree Frogs and Barking tree frogs (I had a female, so it never barked). The male GTF made a "duck duck duck" noise.

The gouramis make a noise like two marbles clacking together quickly.

they are sensitive to water conditions, and like precise water quality
