Man I know this hobby is full of places to drop large amounts of money. But I seriously had no idea that certain live stock might require me to apply for financing. This is the most expensive fish I've ever seen for sale. You guys know of any others you'd like to share? I'm still in amazement over this..

My savings account doesn't even double the amount that that fish is being sold for.

Wow, not only would I have to finance those, I'd also want to take out a life insurance policy on them, that way I don't "flush" $2500 down the toliet when it dies

If I had a fish that expensive shipped to me, I would want it to be in an armored truck that is heat controlled with padding all around the bag. I would want the truck to also hit no bumps while traveling.

I'm in disbelief that there is someone out there that has the money and willingly wants to purchase one. I mean after all it's just a fish... I was reading around some other sites last night and saw some places where people actually jump on them soon as they're in stock. I'd probably die right behind this thing if it kicked the bucket, I'm positive my wife would make sure of that.

WOW! What in the hell makes these fish that expensive? I mean I'm sure that they're rare finds and some of it might have to do with the methods use to obtain them. But c'mon really, a $40k fish? Even if I had the money it still kinda seems on the rediculous side. But hey to each their own I guess. I almost fell out seeing the Tang though, lol.

Seriously if I was a millionaire I would not spend 40k on any fish,or pet, not even a Thoroughbred. LOL I would just spend a few thousand on learning how to catch them myself. Ha Ha Ha. I guess if part of my job was handling these sorts of fish............I would use a company card to get one.

Perhaps it's the golden-goosefish -- and it poops pure gold... In which case, too bad it isn't a pleco!

Normal Price for one of those beauties. Gem Tangs are quite rare in the hobby and when you do find them they are very very expensive.

Seriously? I can't sasy that I'd do something like that even if I was experienced enough to do so. Plus I'd neber have the money for such a purchase. I need to see one in person now though, have to see what the hype is all about.

The vast majority of the cost is the effort involved in capture and transfer of the animal. If you add good looks like that tang you add demand to the cost. Gemmatum tangs are from deep, rocky reefs in the Western Indian Ocean and all over southern Africa. They aren't at all uncommon in nature, but is a solitary species, and going down to get them isn't easy, as the fish have to be decompressed on the way up just like we do.
And getting the safely from there to here is why they are so costly.
There are people that seek out the rare and expensive to 'count coup', which drives the market.
Would I buy a single fish for thousands of dollars? No. Have I? For groups of fish, yes, in the intention of breeding them.
I paid 15 bucks each for the eight Atlantic Blue Tangs (Acanthurus coeruleus) I keep, and to my eye, they are just as beautiful as Gem tangs or any other.

I have a customer that spent $15,000+ on an imported Japanese Koi.
We had a guy that was going to get a black tang that I offered for $499 in bag pick up but he had to got to a wedding, I'm sure he thought twice about that wedding considering black tangs usually go for $700+

Okay, so where was I...
Some fish and their prices just don't seem to match. I really don't get why people would pay $100 for a captive bred flame angel off drs. f&s, when for less than that, they have an immense variety of tangs, lionfish, butterfly fish, etc. to choose from.

Wow, I know that if I had lots of money to pour into my hobby, I'd definitly get a gem tang. I bet it's worth it once you see it in person.
