What if I had a 10g or a 20g what light is good enough for the clam to thrive???

most clams need a tank larger than that but if you get a small one in a 20g i would get a 150w Mh or 8x24w T-5. depends on the clam though

what are the lowest light clams???
I think crocea are very light demanding right???
How bout PC lights???

almost all of them require high light. i wouldnt use PC's, only T-5's and halides. 2x96w PC on a 20g might work, but i dont think the clam would thrive

T-5 are alot stronger than fluorescent, 1 54w T-5 is equal to about 75w in fluorescent terms. 8x54w T-5 and a 400w metal halide are pretty evenly matched

I don't intend on hijacking the thread, but where do Compact fluorescents fit into the rankings of T-5 and metal halides?

Power compacts are basically straight wattage. power compacts are inexpensive but are inefficient also. lighting on efficiency goes basically

T-5, Halides, Power compacts, Fluorescents, Incandescents

LED's are going to be first though, i know someone who bought a 72" LED fixture for $3500 and its sick, and theyre extremely efficient.

Most people I've heard from with the Solaris(I believe) are not happy w/ it. With that price it should have all the kinks worked out which its sounds like isn't the case. While the LEDs have a GOOD PAR value they are not nearly as BRIGHT as a comparable PAR MH or T5. I have seen them in person at trade shows and yes they have some "sick" features like mimicing cloud cover, solar/lunar cycles and so forth they just weren't as BRIGHT as I like.
But anyway I agree w/ you cocoa as far as the lighting is concerned. Properly reflected T5 kick some serious tail as far as PAR is concerned. As a matter of fact I am upgrading the lighting on my 180 and I am only using 8 80 watt T5's thats only 640 watts, and I am expected some nice levels comparable to 750 watts of MH w/ supplemental t5, so not only am I saving money and electricity I am having the ability to "play" with my spectrum more.
Sorry to threadjack
Back to clams.... PCs could maintain a clam high up in the tank, but why waste the $$ on the clam or the lights if its not going to work out?

yeah, as long as youre dropping $50+ on a clam i wouldnt skimp out on lighting

The other issue with clams in such small tanks is the calcium levels. They are calcium sponges and in such small tanks will suck it out very fast.

Thats what kalk top offs and anhydrous CaCl2 are for!:c12:

Yes, but someone not used to dealing with that amount of calcium uptake could easily mess things up in such a small tank, hence the mentioning of it as a concern.
