hi all. I think i need advice as i have looked at the hagewn website but cannot diagnose my issue. I have a fluval 405 that is backed up by 2 other canister filters( avoiding the need to buy a sump, i have merely added extra external filters as i have them and dedicated them to specific functions). Baring in mind all but 1 of these canisters filters were free, i am inclined to use all of them as opposed to a dedicated sump system.

Well my fluval 405 is playing up and i am strugglnig to diagnose the issue. It was working perfectly for the first hour then all of a sudden it sounded like the impellor was going to come through the houseing. Griding/ vibrating nosies. No having had it running for an hour i thought it might simply be an airlock so i shook it and sure enough it stopped. For all of 2 minutes. Then it started again and since then i have been unable to stop it. It is circulating water with no issue albeit slower than if it was working perfectly but it is irritating after having it worknig fine for an hour. Usually it wouldn't bother me but i cannot be bothered swapping it out after running all the piping etc. The only major issue i have is the outlet pipe has a small leak that i have sealled with duck tape but is still finidng a way out. Nothing major and being the outlet i cannot see a problem but no change. I don't want to run the filter for extended periods either as i am worried it will damage the impeller.

So.... any ideas? It sometimes fixes itself for a minute or 2 only to suffer the same problem. If thats any more of an idea. I cannot see any air leaks prior to the filter either.

Cheers.

Is a bubbler near the tube that pulls the water up? If it's sucking bubbles, that will make a lot of racket.

I bet it's sucking in air thru that area that has a hole.

Also, make sure the fittings that go inside the tank are covered with water. They can also pull air in if not submersed.

(Reading your post again, I doubt that leak in the outlet is your problem.)

there is currently no airline into the tank and the intake is fully submerged. The waterline is abour 4 inches from the top and all lines are above the top of the pump.

It is truely peturbing...

It would be fine if i could top the canister up so as to force the air out (if that is the issue) but it has that silly plunger thing. Infact, could that be the source of the issue? It is pushed in as far as it will go but it does look like the weak link in an otherwise good design?
