I would really like to mix the lavender gravel i have with black sand. I think it would look great! The tank is 10g. So how much sand should I buy? And what should the mix be? Half and half? I think I may only have my mollies in the tank, the two I have now, and probably 2 more. So it will be 3 females and one male. Or would I need to add a cory or something to clean the sand?

the tanks pretty much stocked with the mollies, so i would skip cories. you can do any mixing ratio that you want. i would go 5lbs of sand and 5lbs of gravel but you can take/give

Cool. I really did not want the cories. So the half and half mix is not going to make vacuuming a problem then?

As long as you have adequate filteration, adding cories (or other bottom dwellers) should be no problem. They stay on the bottom for the most part where as the mollies are mid to top level, so you can bend the stocking rule in that a case like that.

As Cocoa pointed out, vacuming won't be a problem, its usually a good idea to just let the vacum hover over the substrate if you are using a fine sand, that way you don't stir it up too much. However, you sould sort of stir it up everyonce in awhile to get rid of any gas pockets that may have built up.
