I got some small LR pieces from a grab bin and I've noticed some pests and aiptasia that I'm not wanting to add to my tank. I thought I saw it mentioned somewhere that you can boil LR to kill alotta this stuff. Question is how long do you need to boil it for? And should I use tap or RO water to do this with? Any herbs or spices? lol. Thanks.

i would thinking boiling poses a explosion danger. if theres a ton of pests, throw the rock in vinegar. everything on the rock will die though. if theres just a few, take a blowtorch and go nuts!

You could just let it become dead rock and everything should die on it. Whatever you do to kill the pests will probably take away all the beneficial items on the rock anyway.

I'm not worried at all about the beneficial stuff since their pretty small pieces and I already have about a hundred pounds in my tank right now. I more or less wanted to use these to frag to and make some small tunnels. I have them sitting outside right now and they've been there for the last few days. If I were to just let them sit out how long would it be before you'd think I could use them? And would I need to do any special prep before placing them?

I would think once they have completely dried out all the living things would be dead on it.

once its been in the sun for a few hours everything probably would be dead, iwould wait a day to make sure. after, wash the rock with RO water to get rid of any decaying stuff

Ok they've been outside for about 5 days now, so I'm sure all has died. My main concern was waiting out the Aiptaisa. They left some remenants behind when I was removing them so I didn't wanna risk anything. Thanks for the help guys. I'll hit them with the RO water bath when I get in tonight.

make sure you get all of the aiptasia off, any little living chunks left can spawn new ones

I got off all I could see and this is why I was leaving it outside to dry. You think it still has a chance of resurfacing at this point?
