Well, free from the breeding net. Ha Ha, now they have there own section of the tank. I did lose some when they first got set free, the holes in the divider are large enough for them to swim through still, but the net was way overcrowded. The mom ate several of them that went to the wrong side, and weird, the dad did not, as a matter of fact he attacked her every time she went for one. Now most of them stay on their side. LOL They have either learned, or been lunch. They are so fast, I can barely get any good pics :(

She may just eat the rest of them tonight. Seems that's when they do all their dirty work.

LOL I hope not. I figure they will get thinned out quite a bit, but that is ok. I never expected all of them to survive. Some of them seem pretty smart, they swim fast and hide very well. The babies can get out, but the mom cant get in. I guess I wont really know until the morning.

Not an exact count, because they are way to fast to count each one, but I would estimate 80. They are looking really good, and eating first bites now! Thank you for asking! Oh and the dad is still very protective, when the female gets too close to the divider he will literally push her to the other side of the tank. :)

Wow, I couldn't of ever counted to 100 when counting baby fish! I woulda' been all "Have I counted you before? Or was that your identical twin sister?"

...Lady's got skills!

Gayle

Ha Ha So not skilled. I just took a bunch of pics and counted the ones I could see. Now they are so fast, and when i get the camera close they dart off, so they look like tiny blurs. LOL

Yeah LOL she still tells me that!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am very, very proud of my fry! And I am highly impressed with their father, he is doing a great job!! The mom, well not so happy she eats her own babies, LOL, but that is nature. Just imagine how overcrowded and crazy the world would be if "survival of the fittest" did not happen. I know we change a lot when we intervene, but still....I can say honestly that watching the fry grow has brought me more happiness than getting an A in my anatomy class. Yes I am a geek! I admit it! LOL

What kind of fry are they?

Gayle
09-21-2008, 03:53 PM
They are Lavender Gourami fry. :) I gave about 20 of the small ones that I did not feel were really growing well to one of my teachers for feeders. LOL So yes jaws strikes again!! LOL I now have about 50ish left, they are too big to go through the holes now. FINALLY. So, I guess I am just going to watch them really close, I know that between 3 and 4 weeks is when they develop the labyrinth organ, so I am sure they will thin out more next week. They appear to recognize that I am feeding them, most of them go to the top when I open the lid. So that is good. Silly I know, but I saw one taking a poo earlier and was really excited! I guess that means their systems are working well. The biggest ones have developed the spot on their tail, and their tails are finally starting to fan out a bit. I tried to get some good pics of them, but they are camera shy, LOL, and fast as lightning. I will try to post some in a few minutes!

Here are some pics![Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

Jaws strikes again!!!!!!!!!! With a little help from the evil divider!

OK I have no clue how this happened. I feel asleep a little while ago, looked in on my fish before I headed to the sofa. All was well. I woke up and disaster!! The darn divider had come loose!!!!! I have no idea how the happened, it fits pretty snug in between the sides of the tank. Maybe from Charlie hanging on it all the time, or just my bad luck. Any how, the fry were everywhere! Mom was munching on the small ones, afternoon snack, and dad was chasing them and her, now his belly has turned black as night again! So I got it back as snuggly as I could, but there are still gaps on the back side. I tried not to mess with it too much cause everyone was already going nuts in there. So it looks like my new count may be 25 to 30. There are still several of them on the other side of the divider with mom, dad, and Charlie so my count should drop to 20 overnight. Good news is however, most all of the really big ones seem to be in the divider side, except one.

Here are the pics I took of them last night. I had to move them to a container while I vacuumed their side of the tank. It is much easier to count them that way. LMAO Official count is 21!!!!! I am really proud of them!! If you look at them just right, their Lavender color is really starting to show!

5 weeks Old
