Introducing... Rosco!, my new hatchling red ear slider. I paid $45.14 for him alone! Turtles are rare here but always in excellent condition. He ate first day home and I caught him basking today. His home is a ten gallon for the next 4 months (used to be my black and white tank) then I'm upgrading to a 100g. Anways here are a bunch of pics.

Isn't he cute?

He still hasn't figured out what the ramp on the basking dock is for and climbs up over the far side, it's so funny to watch.

I visit Nova Scotia all the time (sometimes for several months at a time) and I always forget how scenic it is there until I have to come back home to New Hampshire... lol

He is really cool. How often do you change the water?
I'm curious and son has asking for one.
What do you feed him?

I do a 15% water change every other week + topping of what evaporates.
He gets a mix of reptomin/mazuri turtle sticks with frozen shrimp for a treat once a month.:ezpi_wink1:

You have to be careful though because they can carry salmonella.

Right, you do have to be careful about salmonella.(Most all reptiles carry it) Especially if it is a small child handling it. The turtle will not get sick, but people do quite often. If you practice good hygiene everything will be fine.

That basking rock get-up is awesome!

Where'd you get it?

He makes me want to get a turtle.. :)

What kind of fish would be ok with turtles?

Corys? cardinals? otos?

depends on the species doug, but every turtle I've ever owned snacked on anything that went in the tank. It's just the way they are. Eventually, they will eat it.

Could you lower the level of the water and stack some rocks in there for him to climb on? He's a dandy, alright.

They'll eat fish? Really?

How could they be fast enough to catch them?

What's more to their liking?

Deep pools to swim in, like you have, or shallow ones (4" max) with a bigger more accessible basking area?

How big do they get?

Does anyone have a link with info on these types of turtles?

EDIT: Oooh, here's a good one, looks like:

http://www.redearslider.com/index_basic_care.html

I had one of these guys as a kid, but as with the fish I had didn't care for him too well.. :(

Don't remember them being THAT expensive, though ($45)..
