View Full Version : Furry Java Fern

Any idea why some of my java fern leaves look like this? The plant is otherwise healthy as well as my tank. It is reproducing and pearling a little. If I lightly disturb the leaf it clears a little. Is it just trapped particles from the water?

Can't see your picture very clearly, but it does look like it is some sort of algae. Slow growing plants such as Jave ferns are very susceptible to being attacked by different types of algae... Are those "hairs" growing anywhere else in the tank? What color are they?
It's not letting me enlarge the image because it says I need a password. From what I can see it looks like there is hair algae growing on your java fern.

Sorry about that, I have password taken off now. Didn't realise there was one on it.
It's like white fluffy hairs and it's only on some of the leaves and no where else in the tank.

It's only on the edges of the leaf, right? It definitely looks like black brush algae (bba). Actually, I am having an outbreak of that stuff too. I was advised to use hydrogen peroxide and it works really well. This is the thread (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/showthread.php?p=356639#post356639) I just started yesterday...

Thats not bba,bba will not come off by touching it or even pulling on it,that and bba is brown to black in color or green, not white. It could be beard algae which is a red algae like bba but not as tenacious. Are your healthier plants affected by it?

Ok pretty sure now it's fuzz algae. I actually only have Java ferns in that tank, two fairly large ones and they both have the symptoms. Would hydrogen peroxide work?

Manually removing that will work. You need to find out whats causing it though, maybe excess nutrients or light?Or both.
